How Much Horsepower Do You Need?
A rule of thumb for rooms with a normal ceiling height. Go one size up for a west-facing room, a top floor, a high ceiling or a room that is usually full of people.

Inverter
The compressor speeds up and slows down instead of switching on and off. Steadier temperature, quieter, and cheaper to run over long hours, such as a bedroom left on all night. Costs more to buy.
Non-inverter
The compressor runs at one speed, stops at the set temperature and starts again when the room warms up. Lower price, and a sensible choice for a room you only cool now and then.
When comparing models, check the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) star-rating label: more stars means a more efficient unit.

A dedicated power point
An aircond should run on its own power point and circuit breaker, not an extension or a shared socket. Have an electrician check the wiring first, especially in older houses.

Where the outdoor unit goes
The outdoor unit needs open air around it and safe access for servicing later. In a condo or apartment, ask management where outdoor units are allowed.

Pipe run and drainage
The further the indoor unit is from the outdoor unit, the more piping is needed. Plan a route for the drain pipe too, so condensate water does not drip on walls or neighbours.

Measure the room first
Bring the room's length and width when you visit. A west-facing room, a top-floor unit or a high ceiling usually needs one size up.

What horsepower (HP) aircond do I need for my room?

Should I choose an inverter or a non-inverter aircond?
An inverter aircond adjusts its compressor speed instead of switching on and off, so it holds the temperature more steadily, runs quieter and uses less electricity over long hours, such as a bedroom left on all night. A non-inverter costs less to buy and suits a room that is only cooled now and then.
