Why an Aircond Blows Air but Is Not Cold

A split aircond has two halves. The indoor unit on your wall is mostly a fan. The cooling is done by the compressor in the outdoor unit, which pumps refrigerant through the copper pipes between them. When the air coming out feels like a normal fan, the question to ask is: is the outdoor unit running?

"Fan is blowing, outside unit not running" is one of the most common aircond warranty calls we get from homes across Johor, sometimes within weeks of installation. Quite often, though, the cause turns out to be a setting, a dirty filter or a tripped breaker. Those are worth five minutes of your time before anyone comes to the house.

7 Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself

1. Make sure it is in Cool mode

Look for the snowflake symbol on the remote. Fan mode only moves air, and Dry mode mainly removes humidity, so it cools only gently. Auto lets the aircond decide, which can feel like "not cold". Press Mode until Cool shows.

2. Set the temperature below the room

If the remote says 28°C and the room is already about 28°C, the compressor has nothing to do. Set it a few degrees below what the room feels like now. Also check for Sleep or Eco modes: on many models these limit cooling or raise the set temperature over time.

3. Check the remote and the timer

A faint or blank remote display means weak batteries, and the indoor unit may not be getting your commands. Fit new batteries, point the remote at the indoor unit and listen for the beep. Then check that no Off timer is set.

4. Give it 15 minutes, with the room closed

Most units wait a few minutes before restarting the compressor after being switched off, to protect it. An inverter aircond also starts slowly and builds up. Close doors and windows, draw the curtains on a sunny side, and wait 15 minutes before you judge it.

5. Clean the filters

Switch the aircond off first. On most wall units the front cover lifts up on hinges, and the mesh filters slide out. Rinse them under the tap, let them dry in the shade, and slide them back in. Clogged filters choke the airflow, so the aircond feels weak and the indoor coil can even ice up.

6. Look at the outdoor unit

Go outside while the aircond is on. A running outdoor unit hums and its fan spins, and you can feel warm air blowing out. Make sure nothing is in its way: boxes, laundry, plants or a cover. The outdoor unit needs space around it to get rid of heat. Look, but do not open it or poke anything into the fan.

7. Check the breaker

Open your distribution board (DB box) and see whether the aircond's breaker has tripped. If your installer fitted a separate switch near the outdoor unit, make sure it is on. You can reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call a technician. A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something is wrong.

Signs It Needs a Technician

Switch the aircond off and call a technician if any of these apply. Do not keep running it in the hope that it recovers.

  • The outdoor unit stays silent, or its fan does not spin, after all seven checks.
  • Ice or frost on the indoor unit or on the copper pipes, even with clean filters.
  • Hissing, or oily marks at the pipe joints. These can mean a refrigerant leak. Gas does not get used up, so an aircond that is low on gas has a leak that needs fixing, not just a top-up.
  • A burning smell, sparks, or a breaker that keeps tripping. Switch off at the breaker.
  • A blinking light or an error code on the indoor unit. Write down the code and the model number from the sticker and look it up in your user manual. Codes differ between brands and models, so do not rely on a list from the internet.
  • It stopped cooling right after a service. Call the technician who did the service first, and tell them it was cooling before.

When It Is a Warranty Case

If you bought the aircond from Tanradio, in a showroom or on Shopee or TikTok Shop, and it is still under warranty, you do not have to sort this out alone. Do the safe checks above, then file a warranty claim online. You will need your order number, the model and serial number from the sticker on the unit, and the address where the aircond is installed. You get a tracking number to follow the repair.

Some brands handle warranty repairs through their own service centres. When that applies, we pass your details on and keep following up. Your tracking number still works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my aircond running but not cooling?

The indoor unit only moves air; the cooling comes from the compressor in the outdoor unit. Not cold usually means a setting (mode, temperature, timer), a blockage (dirty filters, a crowded outdoor unit), or an outdoor unit that is not running. The first two you can check yourself. The third needs a technician.

Why is the outdoor compressor not running?

Sometimes it is simply waiting: most units hold the compressor for a few minutes after being switched off and on, and an inverter unit ramps up slowly. It also stops once the room reaches the set temperature. If the outdoor unit stays silent for more than 15 minutes in Cool mode at a low set temperature, the cause is usually power to the outdoor unit or a fault in its parts, which is work for a technician.

Does my aircond need a gas top-up?

Not as routine. The refrigerant runs in a sealed loop and is not used up the way petrol is. If an aircond is low on gas, there is a leak somewhere, and the honest repair is to find and fix the leak. Gas work needs a qualified technician and the right equipment, so never try it yourself.

Is it safe to keep using an aircond that is not cold?

If it is only blowing air, there is little point and it is better to switch it off until it is checked. Switch it off at once if you see ice on the pipes or the indoor unit, smell burning, see water dripping inside, or the breaker trips.

Is an aircond that is not cold covered by warranty?

It depends on the brand's warranty terms and on the cause. If you bought it from Tanradio and it is still under warranty, do the safe checks first and then file a warranty claim online. You get a tracking number, and we follow up with the brand's service centre where they handle the repair.
